Eco is for Economics in Ecology - 6th April 2009
Going for green biz opportunities
Increasingly, the cost of energy, the effects of pollution and increasing awareness of healthy lifestyles are shaping attitudes of consumers. Sustainability is on the lips of both innovators and entrepreneurs who see the business opportunities arising from providing products and services that help consumers improve their quality of living.
The global financial crisis and the consequent worldwide economic slow down have made societies across the planet realize that global problems demand global solutions. The Group of 20 countries meeting in London recently to stabilize and stimulate national economies reaffirmed market mechanisms will remain as the foundation for economic growth. This mindset translates to global market opportunities for businesses promoting new technologies.
When consumers ask questions like, "'Tell me if these curly bulbs will help me save some money?"' we know that the green economy has arrived. When consumers believe that healthy eating mean healthy living, we know the green economy is here to stay. Save energy is a mantra that promotes energy efficient products. Even as fancy restaurants close worldwide, fast-food chains promoting healthy meals at affordable prices are actually seeing an increase in sales.
Amazon the on-line book distributor is now promoting the “kindle” a hardware device which functions as an electronic paper display that allows for electronic download of books. The end of book publishing is near and millions of trees could be saved. Green is high tech, green is cool, green is a money spinner when done right.
Businesses are also beginning to appreciate the cost savings that result from changes to internal management systems incorporating cleaner and greener ways of doing things. Real change and permanent cost savings only happen when there is a commitment to sustainability throughout the entire business organization. It has to be a mindset change entrenched into the corporate ethics and expressed through attitudes of employees.
As companies shift towards utilizing robotics or electronic computer systems such as servers for data storage and processing the realization has to be that we need to go beyond curly energy light bulbs and recycled paper towards energy savings in information technology systems. The shift will have to be towards more efficient designs and creating greater efficiencies in server utilization.
IBM, known as “Big Blue” in the business world has initiated action under the banner "Big Green" to help the company and its customers become even more environmentally conscious in their business practices. Big Green which came out of meetings with information officers worldwide recommends that energy costs figure in all its business.
Staples a stationary and office supplies chain operating successfully in Canada has improved delivery by utilizing robots in its warehouses to stack and pack supplies.
The standard of measure of profitability in embracing green management systems and the marketing of services and products need to be measured with a “yard stick” combining monetary “internal rate of return”, “return on investment” and the measure of the companies “carbon footprint”. Flexibility is the key when shifting to the green advantage of green products, green systems and green profit. Pursuing the greenback has never been greener. Being hip, trendy and innovative must however, at the end of the day, boost the bottom line of both human and financial profit.
